About This Experience
Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea in Krakow is an Alice in Wonderland tea party for anyone who thinks a birthday, or an unbirthday, deserves more than coffee and cake. You’ll sit down at a table dressed like a scene from the story at Scandale Royal, overlooking Szczepanski Square and a few minutes’ walk from the Main Market Square. There’s Prosecco, a spread of sweet and savoury treats, a pile of hats and a couple of hours to enjoy it all at your own pace. It’s one of the more unusual things to do in Krakow’s Old Town, and one of the easiest to book.
Afternoon Tea, but a Little Mad
Afternoon tea, sometimes called high tea, has been a very British tradition since the 1840s, and the Mad Hatter’s tea party is its most famous scene: chapter seven of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, where it’s always six o’clock and always teatime. Our Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea borrows that spirit and makes the traditional version more playful, a little sillier and a lot more fun. “Eat Me” tags, playing cards, a ticking clock and bunny ears are scattered across the table, and the hats are there to be worn. The Mad Hatter has left a few questions for you to answer, which gets even the quietest guest talking, and at some point someone will be painting the roses red. Join in as much or as little as you like.
A Wonderland Table, Ready When You Arrive
Your table is already set when you sit down: cheeses and cold cuts to share, sweet and savoury bites, pastries and Wonderland-inspired treats, with a little fortune cookie to start things off. You’ll have a glass of Prosecco, or a non-alcoholic alternative, and your choice of tea, coffee or a soft drink. Everything is laid out to be picked at slowly, and photographed first.
Scandale Royal, Szczepanski Square
Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea is hosted at Scandale Royal Restaurant, Wine & Bar, overlooking Szczepanski Square on the edge of Krakow’s Old Town. It’s a few minutes’ walk from the Main Market Square and the Planty park, so it fits easily into a day of sightseeing, and the elegant room makes a lovely backdrop for a very silly afternoon. The square is also home to the Palace of Art and the Bunkier Sztuki gallery, if you’d like a little culture before your tea.
