How Many Days Do You Need in Krakow?

Quick answer: 2 full days covers the essential sights. 3-4 days lets you slow down and actually enjoy the city. 5+ days gives you room for day trips to Auschwitz, the Wieliczka Salt Mine, or the Tatra Mountains without rushing.

Krakow is one of those cities people plan for a weekend and end up wishing they’d booked longer. Here’s a realistic breakdown depending on how much time you’ve got.

1 Day in Krakow

Doable, but tight. If it’s all you’ve got, focus on the Old Town: the Main Square (Rynek Główny), St. Mary’s Basilica, the Cloth Hall, and Wawel Castle and Cathedral on the hill above the Vistula. Add a walk through Kazimierz, the old Jewish Quarter, if you have an extra hour or two — it’s a completely different atmosphere from the Old Town and worth seeing even briefly.

What you won’t have time for: any day trip, and probably any sit-down meal that isn’t quick.

2-3 Days in Krakow

This is the sweet spot for most first-time visitors. Two days lets you cover the Old Town properly and spend real time in Kazimierz — its bars, milk bars, and street food are as much a part of Krakow as the historic centre. A third day is usually where people add one of the following: Schindler’s Factory Museum, the Rynek Underground museum beneath the Main Square, or a half-day exploring further afield in the city.

Three days is also the minimum we’d suggest if you want to fit in a single day trip without feeling rushed — Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka Salt Mine are the two most common choices, and both are close enough to Krakow to do in a day.

4-5+ Days in Krakow

This is where Krakow really opens up. With four or five days you can comfortably do:

  • The full Old Town and Kazimierz experience, unrushed
  • One or two day trips (Auschwitz, Wieliczka, or further out to the Tatra Mountains and Zakopane)
  • Something beyond sightseeing — a food tour, a cooking workshop, a wellness experience, or an evening out that isn’t just “another restaurant”

If you’re the kind of traveller who likes a mix of history, food, and something a bit more active or offbeat, this is the range where Krakow stops feeling like a checklist and starts feeling like an actual trip.

Our Take

Most guests we talk to underestimate Krakow. It’s a compact city, so people assume two days is plenty and then find themselves wishing they’d left room for a day trip or a slower morning in Kazimierz. If you can stretch to 4 days, do it — you’ll use every one of them.

FAQ

Is 2 days enough for Krakow? Yes, for the core Old Town and Wawel Castle. It won’t leave room for day trips like Auschwitz or the Salt Mine.

How many days do you need to include Auschwitz and the Salt Mine? Budget at least one full day for each. Both are roughly 1-1.5 hours from Krakow, so trying to combine them in a single day means very little time at either site.

Is Krakow walkable? Very. The Old Town and Kazimierz are both compact and easy to cover on foot, with trams available for anything further out.
